The Purge: Anarchy – A Review

Minor spoilers ahead…

“This is your emergency broadcast system announcing the commencement of the annual Purge. At the siren, all emergency will be suspended for 12 hours. Your government thanks you for your participation.

Non-compliance with any of the aforementioned rules will result in death by hanging. Commencing at the siren, any and all crime, up to, and including Murder, will be legal for 12 continuous hours. Police, fire and hospital aid will be unavailable until … when The Purge concludes. Blessed be our New Founding Fathers and America, a nation reborn.

This is not a test. This is your emergency broadcast system announcing the commencement of the Annual Purge sanctioned by the U.S. Government. Weapons of class 4 and lower have been authorized for use during the Purge. All other weapons are restricted. Government officials of ranking 10 have been granted immunity from the Purge and shall not be harmed. Commencing at the siren, any and all crime, including murder, will be legal for 12 continuous hours. Police, fire, and emergency medical services will be unavailable until tomorrow morning until 7 a.m…when The Purge concludes. Blessed be our New Founding Fathers and America, a nation reborn. May God be with you all.”

Could you imagine living in a country that allows this? In my line of work I see a lot of scum, and a lot of scum that take advantage of the less fortunate, so when I learned of this movie it started a very hot topic of debate for me. Would people stand for this? Would you kill someone? What would you do if a loved one kill? Would I survive?

Because truth be told, if this was legit, pretty sure this is how it would be. After watching Last Night’s Premier and hearing the audience… yeah it would go down.

Again in typical Jen fashion, digress.

I saw The Purge last year, because as I said, the concept of this film fascinated me.  A lawless night that the Government pardons Murder?  Umm hell yeah I will go see that.

While I enjoyed the first movie, it was really just a home invasion movie. Nothing original.  I felt I had seen this movie before, it was just set in a world where one night a year murder was legal.  Well the world is somewhat original. I will say the first movie did set up the concept of The Have’s vs The Have Not’s.

I left wanting more (I tell you I am a lunatic), I wanted to know about people who disagree with the purge, the people that don’t accept their love ones getting murdered (cause I am sorry you kill a person I love, not sure I would wait until it was “legal”). I was disappointed that I paid to watch another home invasion movie when I was expecting dystopian street gangs & rich people that think they are entitled to kill (it was implied in the first film, that the rich have a sense of entitlement).

Anyway, when I first saw the trailer for The Purge: Anarchy, I thought hell yeah, that is what we should have gotten the first time around.

I don’t care about what happens in the safety of ones home, I want to know what the hell goes down on the streets. Cause let’s face it peeps, I am not rich, I wouldn’t have some state of the art security system, in fact I am assuming most wouldn’t. Obviously I would be a Have Not.

Before I saw the movie I was under the impression that the couple ran out of gas.

This part bugged the crap out of me. It bugged me before I even want to see the movie. In fact I was asking co-workers, would you run out of gas? Seriously? It really irked me.

The couple runs out of gas…on the night of the purge… the night murder is legal… less than a hour before the purge starts… on a bridge… You with me on where I am going with this?

If that doesn’t scream Darwinism I don’t know what does.

People freak the hell out when a hurricane “might” happen and practically wait for hours in line to get gas, “just in case”.

In this situation, YOU KNOW MURDER IS ABOUT TO BE LEGAL FOR 12 HOURS” how the HELL do you run out of gas?

I am telling you not only would have a full tank of gas, I would have back up gas, a machete, a gun & pop tarts. Just in case I have to make a run for it. You got me?

This bothered me from the very beginning, how are you running late getting home AND you run out of gas? Seriously.

I just want to say, the couple DID NOT run out gas their vehicle was tampered with. Why was their vehicle tampered with? Well you will need to see the movie.

Now this makes sense, I am so glad the writers did it this way.

So how did I like the movie?

I loved it. I am not that into gore and I was worried this movie would be a gory one, because today horror movies try to out gore the last. This was not the case.

It was very much a thriller where 5 people are just trying to survive the night. This Purge is exactly one year after the first movie.

4 of the people are on the streets by accident one of them is there to Purge.

We know from the previews that Frank Grillo is seeking retribution for his son that was killed. You don’t find out how his son was killed until the last five minutes. I didn’t see that coming by the way.

Side note: if they remake the Punisher, Frank Grillo has my vote. He was pretty believable as this character. He has a new fan, that much is for sure.

The plot of the New Founding Fathers of America thickens in this movie. We find out how truly menacing they are, which is really no shocker. I mean if you think about it they are a government that allows murder for one night a year but grants them immunity. yeah… they are not corrupt at all.

Also there is a resistance that comes into play, and because of this I fully expect a third movie, hell I want the third movie. This movie was that good.

Sure there are some things about this world that are not believable and deep down you know that would never happen, but truth be told when I go to a movie I go to be entertained and for 100 minutes I was highly entertained.

There is a scene (that is in the previews) where a broker is strung up on his bank for loosing a person’s pension.  That did give me slight chills, because in my line of work I piss people of daily.  People in my line of work would be a target, hell if this world was legit I would be a target.

If you are worried about guts spilling out and gross factor, it is minimal. This movie really is all about the thrill of survival. I jumped exactly twice.  I called some of the characters stupid idiots often cause let’s face it ever survival movie needs a few idiots.

One thing I would like to see in the next movie is more of other crimes taking place. Cause gonna be honest folks if the Purge was real, I would be knocking over Neiman Marcus and clearing out Christian Louboutin’s & Valentino. Don’t have a need to murder anyone but I would set myself up to have a fabulous wardrobe the following year.

The Purge: Anarchy comes out July 18. Believe me it is worth it for entertainment value. If you are wanting to debate the “actuality” of the situation, you might want to pass.

My rating? A

A because I was highly entertained and for the most part I felt the movie was believable, and the acting was ok, not Oscar worthy but believable.
