Midnight Crossroad (Midnight, Texas #1) by Charlaine Harris

From Charlaine Harris, the bestselling author who created Sookie Stackhouse and her world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, comes a darker locale – populated by more strangers than friends. But then, that’s how the locals prefer it…

Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).

Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth…

My Review:

Confession: I watched the show before I read the book.

Yes I know bad Jen but I have to be honest after the whole True Blood train wreck we had to endure I was wary to read another series by Harris but man I am glad I read this book.

I enjoyed this way more than the first book in the Southern Vampire Series. Yes I know there are some that are going to call me crazy but I did.

Honestly I think it is because there is more to focus on than just two characters well three when you throw in a love triangle.

THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN in this book and that makes it fantastic.

I loved each and every character.  Yes even the ones that don’t exactly have the best morals.  I love how they all work together in this one crazy fictional Texas town… but still have the Texas charm.

I love how the relationships ALL feel authentic and not forced.   Honestly I just love this book and thing that you should read it AND watch the show.

Review: Zom-B (Zom-B #1) by Darren Shan

Summary: Zom-B is a radical new series about a zombie apocalypse, told in the first person by one of its victims. The series combines classic Shan action with a fiendishly twisting plot and hard-hitting and thought-provoking moral questions dealing with racism, abuse of power and more. This is challenging material, which will captivate existing Shan fans and bring in many new ones. As Darren says, “It’s a big, sprawling, vicious tale…a grisly piece of escapism, and a barbed look at the world in which we live. Each book in the series is short, fast-paced and bloody. A high body-count is guaranteed!”

My Review:  I FREAKING loved this book.  I am a bit addicted to zombie novels and always searching for more.   This book was unique because it tackles serious issues such as wife beating and racism.  Which of course has been done before but what makes this book unique is the main character struggles with the fact that even though his father is a racist he wants to make him proud so he will do racist things.

It is such a well written book and a very fast read.  IT has one heck of a cliffhanger that will make you scream “the F” at 3am.   It is so good!

The characters are well developed and you are able to opinions quickly believe me because they are so well written.   The plot is fantastic and very well paced.  I couldn’t put it down, I really hated that I had to return my library copy… which just means I will buy it so I can read it again 🙂

Have you read Zom-B… pretty wicked moment huh?

The First Days (As the World Dies #1) by Rhiannon Frater

Katie is driving to work one beautiful day when a dead man jumps into her car and tries to eat her.  That same morning, Jenni opens a bedroom door to find her husband devouring their toddler son.

Fate puts Jenni and Katie—total strangers—together in a pickup, fleeing the suddenly zombie-filled streets of the Texas city in which they live. Before the sun has set, they have become more than just friends and allies—they are bonded as tightly as any two people who have been to war together.

During their cross-Texas odyssey to find and rescue Jenni’s oldest son, Jenni discovers the joy of watching a zombie’s head explode when she shoots its brains out. Katie learns that she’s a terrific tactician—and a pretty good shot.

A chance encounter puts them on the road to an isolated, fortified town, besieged by zombies, where fewer than one hundred people cling to the shreds of civilization.

It looks like the end of the world. But Katie and Jenni and many others will do whatever they have to to stay alive. Run, fight, pick each other up when they stumble, fall in love…anything is possible at the end of the world.

My Review:  I have a major love/hate relationship with zombies.  I love the zombie trend and I honestly can’t enough zombie books, movies… The Walking Dead.  I mean it is fun to watch but to be quite frank they terrify me and I am pretty sure I would be one of the first to go.

I digress.  This book was one of the first books I put on my Goodread shelves back in 2013 when I joined.  I just now read it and man it did NOT disappoint.   I love how action packed this story was.  The characters were complex and found themselves in complex situations.    Everything I expect when I watch anything zombie related.

Plus Texas was ground zero at least I feel that is what the book has implied thus far, I love any book set in my home state.

I feel if you are looking for a zombie book that has a different perspective on what a zombie is this book is 100% for you! It is available on Amazon, Audible and at most libraries!

Book Review Sunday

This book has been on my list for quite some time. I love zombie books but if I am going to be truthful here… Zombies scare the crap out of me.

This book is really no different.

The Plot: As most zombie books this book is set after the zombie apocalypse, life as we currently know it is gone. A virus outbreak that effects all mammels has pretty much made every animal over 40 pounds a zombie. Humans live in zones, and humans get their news from bloggers.

Enter Georgia and her twin brother Shaun. Our two main characters, that track the news and zombie outbreak, and get the break of a lifetime to follow a Presidential Candidate (of course our government managed to survive the apocalypse!)

What happens is a series of events, that lead to one hell of a crazy ending. I was actually very sad about the ending… but don’t fear I won’t spoil it for you.

Plus the ending was an ending I NEVER saw coming.

This book is a trilogy and I have not read books 2 or 3. I will eventually. In fact I am kinda shocked I haven’t read the books just yet.

I gave this book 5 stars because it was a fast paced page turner that totally got me in the end. I will say that as far as zombie books go, I personally think this is one of the better ones.
