Summer of Irreverence – The Rock Star by Cathrine Goldstein

Summer of Irreverence – The Rock Star
by Cathrine Goldstein
Genre: Adult Romance
The Wild Rose Press

Summary from Goodreads:

Straight-laced, veterinary surgeon, Summer Wynters is ready to break the rules. And who better to break them with than the most irreverent of all men, mega rock star Malcolm Angel? With one last summer free from work obligations, Summer moves to New York City, and at the coaxing of her friend, pretends to be a model so she can spend one wild night with Malcolm.

Rock star, Malcolm Angel, tortured by a dark past, may be the poet laureate of romance, but he, like science-minded Summer, has never believed in romantic love. How could he? With his history, he doesn’t deserve to be loved.

When Summer’s honesty, kindness, and exuberance for life changes his perspective, the two discover they are in deeper than either dreamed possible. But when Malcolm discovers Summer’s been perpetuating a lie, will he forgive her? Even if forgiveness is possible, can a man immune to love teach someone else to believe in it?

My Review:  So before I get going a few things first, I was super excited when this book came out, that I literally bought it the day it came back… then life got in the way and I just finished it.  I am trying to get caught up on all the books I set out to read but never got around to reading.

Second, I am so excited that we are finally going to dive deeper into Natasha.  I really wish she would get her own movie or netflix series… something, but alas I don’t think we will so therefore I am going to settle for the book.

Third, this book does appear to be in the MCU, based on some of the things said all I can tell you is the book appears to take place after the first Avengers movie and before Winter Soldier… because she is still working for SHIELD… but references the events of New York and Loki, so in my opinion that is the timeline we are dealing with.  If you have another theory I would love to hear it.

This book was fantastic, before the beginning of every chapter you knew that something ominous was going to happen as she is being interviewed for her actions.  Then you find out why she is being interviewed for her actions.

The book is action packed and very well paced.  WE see so much of her personality and her lack of attachment but spoiler Natasha DOES have feelings and does get attached and tries to do the right thing, but things don’t go the way she hopes.  There is a pretty sad moment in this book and it is like man, this sucks.

I have read other reviews and I have seen some negativity regarding Ava but I liked her, so as far as that goes I felt it worked in this book.   I certainly think if you have not read this and you are a Marvel fan girl like I am (I am seriously ashamed I have not read this, I brag daily about being a Marvel fangirl) you need to read this asap.

Julie and Brad Evans are house flippers. They buy low, clean out the old occupants’ junk, and try to make a profit. Enter Hemmings House on Bedlam Street in scenic Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island. Too good a deal to pass up, but with an ominous secret. The old Victorian Mansion has dwellers that do not want to be dispossessed. As the house reveals it’s past, will the couple’s marriage survive The Flip?
From Publisher’s Weekly- The Flip
Michael Phillip Cash (Stillwell) again succeeds in setting an engaging supernatural thriller in the world of Long Island real estate, though he’s stronger at depicting human relationships than he is at generating scares. Julie and Brad Evans have hinged their hopes of financial security on house flipping, a work-intensive strategy that offers them few opportunities for relaxation. Brad has misgivings about their latest acquisition, a creepy Victorian mansion, ominously situated on Bedlam Street in Cold Spring Harbor. Those feelings are validated when he’s victimized by Tessa, a voracious female ghost with very carnal appetites. Cash is effective at creating his version of the afterlife, where ghosts like Tessa exist in fear of more powerful entities known as the Sentinels. His best work comes, however, in his plausible portrayal of a marriage under stress from the need to hustle to stay solvent. (BookLife)

Excerpts – (if using)

Chapter Twenty

I said I’m not going back there. That house is haunted. There, I’ve said it. It’s a haunted house.” “Julie!” Heather protested. “Stop that. You are so much better than this.”

Brad sighed. “Look, I’ll call Sal. His girlfriend works or that medium you talked about. If she comes with us to the house, will you come home?”

“It isn’t home, Brad. I thought you hated the house.”

“I did. I do. Well, it’s been kind to us,” he said.

“Are you nuts? What are you talking about?”

“The crap we’ve pulled out of there. We stand to make a considerable amount of money. I feel like the house is sort of saving us. Come home with me, Julie.”

Julie looked at his face, the lines of worry around his eyes. She put her hand in his, asking, “You’ll call the lady, Georgia?”

Brad pulled out his phone and dialed Sal. “Hi. Yeah, fine. Listen, Sal, you think you can ask Molly if she can get the psychic out to Bedlam House? Just because. For Julie. OK, call me back.” He turned to his wife. “He’s calling. He said he’s sure he can get her out there. She was interested in the house when he had coffee with her last week.”

“He had coffee with her?” Heather asked. “Small world.”

“What should I do?” Julie asked her sister.

“You know what you should do. You belong with Brad. Go home, Julie. Go confront your ghosts.”

“You don’t believe me?”

“I think you believe you’ve had a ghostly encounter. But, honestly, I think you’re just overtired.”

“Come with us, Heather. Maybe if you’re there, you’ll see it, too.”

“Just go with Brad. Call me.” Heather kissed her sister. “It will be fun—the psychic—go on.”

Brad’s phone rang loudly. It was Sal. Georgia Oaken had agreed to visit them tomorrow morning. Everybody was looking forward to it. Sort of.

How I Spent my Summer Vacation by Michael Phillip Cash

How I spent my summer vacation? When you’re a write, you don’t really get a vacation, but I managed to take some time off this summer.  I needed it.  After 15 best-selling novels on Amazon, and 20+ screenplays winning dozens of awards around the country, I had to take a break. I felt it was the right time to stand still and enjoy what I accomplished. This was the summer to be present and let myself drift for just a bit. I wanted to be mindful and grateful for getting to this point in my life.  I looked back to where I wanted to be years ago.  Remember that song by U2? I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For?  I realized  that I had indeed found what I was looking for.  It was one of those defining moments when it all becomes crystal clear and you take the time to savor your reality. Really enjoy it…like a good piece of chocolate.

Instead of jumping to the next project, I stopped the clock for a little bit.  Don’t get me wrong, I still wrote.  Once a writer, always a writer, but I didn’t treat it as a job, more like a hobby.  It was actually my entertainment attorney who told me to “chill”.  Let the cards fall.  Keep writing but don’t be so frantic about. The kinetic need to keep producing was put on hold and I spent my days noticing all the things we miss when we are too consumed with working and moving.  This summer revolved around my wife and kids.  We swam, we played mini-golf, we went to every movie possible. Time slowed to a crawl and the lazy evenings were spent in the pursuit of fireflies and eating s’mores around our fire pit.

But the cool breezes from the North have started to make their presence known. They stir and eddy, letting us know it is time to stop playing and go inside the house again. I live on Long Island. The trees are beginning to turn different colors. More leaves are covering my lawn. It’s chillier in the morning. It’s darker at 7pm. Fall is upon us. Summer was a blast, but I’m ready for the fall. I’m ready for change.  I’m ready to clean up the screenplays and novels I was writing in the spring.  I feel rested, my mind is cleared.  It made all the difference. Summer 2016 was a great one. I cannot wait to see what Fall 2016 has in store.  Back to work…
