Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch

Summary: “I made the wrong choice.”

Lina is spending the summer in Tuscany, but she isn’t in the mood for Italy’s famous sunshine and fairy-tale landscape. She’s only there because it was her mother’s dying wish that she get to know her father. But what kind of father isn’t around for sixteen years? All Lina wants to do is get back home.

But then she is given a journal that her mom had kept when she lived in Italy. Suddenly Lina’s uncovering a magical world of secret romances, art, and hidden bakeries. A world that inspires Lina, along with the ever-so-charming Ren, to follow in her mother’s footsteps and unearth a secret that has been kept for far too long. It’s a secret that will change everything she knew about her mother, her father—and even herself.

People come to Italy for love and gelato, someone tells her, but sometimes they discover much more.

My Review:  I am in absolute love with this book.  This book was a book that had me turning page after page thanks to her mom’s journal and me wanting to know the outcome.   This book was such a sweet book and I am in love with it.  It has me practically gushing to the point that I almost wonder if in December it will be one of my favorites read of the year.

Lina is an amazing character she has the right amount of complexity for a character and she behaves how you would expect a person to behave after loosing her mother.  Ren was adorable at least how I imagine Ren to be.   The story is set in Florence which is a romantic back drop that will make you want to pack a suitcase and book a flight to Florence immediately.

Plus the story has a mysterious element surrounding Lina’s mother’s journal.  It is a story within a story that adds so much depth and charm to this novel.  I have never read a book by this author and in fact I believe this might be a debut.  I can tell you one thing though I will read this author from now on thanks to this amazingly charming book that will make you remember what it is like to be young and fall in love.

Country Book is Set in: Italy

I am in a very “Italy” mood lately, Italian food, Italy photographs, Italy books and movies.  I believe it is because my brain knows deep down I am not going to be able to travel much this year due to health issues and my desire to save money so it is trying to find other ways to explore the world from home.

When I googled “books set in Italy” the lists were endless, there are so many books & movies out there I know they will keep me occupied for awhile.  I came across this book and the reviews on goodreads were favorable so I figured I would give this book a go.

Immediately I knew the author and I spoke the same language, she has the same thoughts about America as a whole and I was enchanted by her story.   This book is a very quick and short read and very much worth the time I spent reading the book.

The authors commentary on the differences between Americans and Italians was classic and often caused me to laugh out loud.  I especially enjoyed the whole “Grab the underwear the dogs are coming” portion of the book… confused go read this book.

I am also going to steal the quote “Tender age of laundry not my problem”

This book made me laugh often and hard and made my lust of all things Italian grow that much more.

Every chapter ended on a “useful Italian phrase” and was the perfect commentary on Italians as a whole.

My rating five stars
